One of our community’s birthday traditions emerged from an experience I had on my 50th. It happened to be on a Friday, and that evening I went to a service led by Rabbi Shefa Gold. I had asked ahead of time if she would give me a birthday blessing. In the service, she said that on your birthday, blessing flows through you … and asked me to bless the group. Yes, I felt put on the spot! And giving a blessing felt sacred. Now I always invite the birthday person to offer a blessing.
Rafiki turned 4 on Monday! On Sunday, I taught “Rafiki,” the routine I created to celebrate my little guy. I offered this blessing on his behalf.
May you wag more and bark less.
May you play joyously with your friends.
May you enjoy the treats that come your way.
May you give yourself the gift of rest.
May you give lots of kisses.
